British military Captain Tom Moore answered the call to defend his country in World War II. He lived through the Great Smog of London, economic depression, and terrorism, and now he’s helping healthcare workers fight one of the most serious threats England has ever seen, the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Moore is completing 10 laps of his 25-meter back yard every day leading up to his 100th birthday on April 30. According to SBS News, Moore has so far raised about $8 million for the National Health Service. He believes they deserve every penny, too.

“The more it comes in the better, because when I was in hospital with my hip and then with my head, the service I got was absolutely unbelievable,” he said. “Fortune favors the brave, and that’s what they are, they’re brave.”

COVID-19 illness is a serious threat to all humans, with the elderly and those with serious chronic medical conditions at the greatest risk. The UK has registered more than 12,000 COVID-19-related deaths in 2020. It maintains one of the highest rates of coronavirus-related deaths in the world.

Still, this Britons is undeterred, even as his own Prime Minister Boris Johnson spent time in intensive care to be treated for COVID-19.

COVID-19 is still spreading throughout the world, and many have been instructed by national, state, and local governments to shelter in place. There is no reliable prediction for how many the disease will effect, but it’s clear that the most reliable way to avoid the disease is by staying away from other potential carriers.

Moore won’t have any trouble doing that. He doesn’t plan on venturing out any further than his back yard these days while under quarantine.
