The Army instills loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage into all soldiers and expects them to live by these values every day. Dogs, although not trained by the Army, also live by these values, and the two end up saving each other during times of war.

American soldiers stationed in Syria were recently informed that they were going home, but are on a mission to bring their beloved puppy back with them.

Paws of War, a non-profit that helps rescue ‘war torn’ dogs, has joined with the soldiers in their mission. They posted, “Deep in some of the most dangerous parts of Syria, our Armed Forces continue to protect not only us, but so many others. So when they stumbled upon a small, whimpering puppy trying to huddle in a pile of dead puppies, they could not look away.”

The frail puppy was the sole survivor surrounded by five deceased puppies, which likely died of starvation and dehydration. The soldiers were not giving up on her, so they scooped up the puppy and nursed her back to health.

They named her Harley and she followed her new family everywhere, including on missions. She never left their side and they want to show the same loyalty to her. She is part of their family and soldiers never leave a member behind.

“Nobody on base can bear the thought of her being left alone to fend for herself,” wrote Paws of War, but the process to get her to the US is not easy. It is full of “unbelievable obstacles” and will require $6,000 in donations by June 6, reports WXJT News.

Robert Misseri, co-founder of Paws of War, said, “We will make every effort to bring Harley to America so she can live out her life here. The soldiers believe they saved Harley, but really she may have saved them.”

An unnamed, for his safety, soldier will provide a loving forever home for Harley. Donations to bring Harley back to America can be made through Paws of War’s website or by clicking here.
